flarin' up

although my style has developed notably within the past few years, there's no doubt that my first, most outward exhibition of personal style was my obsession with the '70s from ages 12-16. i loved disco music, lava lamps, lime green, all things bizarrely shiny, white lipstick, that same white lipstick as white eyeliner, and flares. oh dear god did i love flares. although i love myself a good skinny jean, there is little that rivals the glorious indulgence of uber-flares with super-high platforms. as the flare begins to reposition itself amongst the skinnies and cuffed boyfriends of the world, i'm sure you can imagine my delight.

A Few of My Favorite Blings

Having discussed basics and brought up footwear, we can't leave behind my fave things to shop for, statement pieces! Just a few key trend pieces each season can get a ton of mileage. This year the trends harken back to a Joan Jett meets Debby Harry in tough glam sort of fashion. The above Alexis Bittar Extra Large Cushion Ring has a picasso-esque edge to it that I adore.


I live and die in bangles. I as many as I can, stacked, almost everyday. I love these studded Ralph Lauren stackers, together or with other bangles, they achieve that Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton Fall '09 look we love so well.


Biker Jackets are key this fall and I just want to exist in Balmain. Sexy biker chic over some sequins. D.I.E.

Sequins are the tits this autumn. This Matthew Williamson sequined t-shirt dress would be enough to die for with the Balmain Coat and some A-maze high heels.


Obvi, I die for this Chanel braided chain necklace. I mean I'm melting to the floor. This with pearls is too much to handle and Avelle, the new Bag, Borrow, Steal, is faboosh. They will send this glorious gem to your home free of charge at the rental price of just $64/week!

The Kate Spade Sherwood-Ida bag is too kitsch for me to pass up. A retro 1970's owl man would be slammin with some bell bottoms, clod-hopping wedges, and a drapey, open front cardi. Yes please!

ain't nothing wrong with a little shoulder sass

Okay, so, if we were randomly going to discuss five things you should know about me, aside from my affinity for cabernet, magazines and movies, YSL would probably be #1. I mean, I have his initials tattooed on my wrist. It's pretty serious. Before you think I'm completely insane, I fell deeply in love with man first, when I read The Beautiful Fall by Alicia Drake (read it, it's amazing) which led to an ultimate and completely biased obsession with his clothing. THAT all being said, you can probably guess how I feel about the resurgence in androgynous womenswear. I love it. I love it a lot. Totally digging harem pants, bowler shoes and blazers in a big way.

When it comes to exploring this trend, you cannot deny how good Balmain's FW09 show was. I'm in love with how masculine, yet so seductive Christophe Decarnin's pieces are. Sequins mixed with studs mixed with sharp shoulders mixed with flowing pants and ass-kicking shoes. But what I'm really loving is the strong shouldered blazer. It's a delicious way of taking a classic piece to the next level, and it gives the idea of a power suit a whole new meaning. Studs, sequins, satin, it's perfect in every way it comes.

Sigh. I find androgyny terribly sexy.






And even as a blouse! Look how soft and feminine this looks...even with the shoulders. So completely chic.
